United States of America (Press Release) September 17, 2007 --
OriginsUSA is a national organization dedicated to Family Preservation, justice and education for families separated by adoption.
OriginsuSA is in full support of Gary Stocklaufer’s appeal to maintain custody of the baby Max, son of his cousin, he and his wife have been raising at the request of his cousin, Max’s mother.
We are appalled that courts would decide against what is in the best interest of a child: to remain with family, when there is no potential for harm or danger to the child.
Max’s mother, interviewed by KMBC-TC, Kansas City and identified as Penny, states that her intent was clearly to allow her cousin, Stocklaufer, to adopt her infant son. Bernadette Wright, PhD, president of OriginsUSA explains: “Once a voluntary relinquishment of parents has been signed, however, the child can be placed, at the court’s arbitrary discretion, in opposition to the wishes of the child’s mother.”
OriginsUSA believes, as does the United Nations, that adoption should be a last resort; that all attempts to help mothers in crisis should be made available. If, as in this case, the mother is still unable to parent then extended family is the next best option for children.
OriginsUSA advocates permanent legal guardianship (PLG) in place of adoption. PLG provides all that is necessary for extended family or others to raise, care for, and provide for all of the legal, medical and education needs of children entrusted to them, without taking from their connections to their family of origins.
