Romania (Press Release) September 19, 2007 --
In 1981 the United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 36/67 declaring an International Day of Peace. In 2001, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a new resolution 55/282 declaring 21 September of each year as the International Day of Peace.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan has asked all United Nations departments and agencies to expand their observance, extending a special invitation to civil society and highlighting the Minute of Silence at 12 noon.
The World Peace Prayer Society encourages participation by all individuals, organizations and schools.
Since 1997, WPPS has assisted the United Nations Department of Public Information in producing a program for New York school children at UN Headquarters, including a World Peace Flag Ceremony. The program has featured greetings by Mrs. Nane Annan (wife of Secretary-General Kofi Annan), Under Secretary-General Shashi Tharoor, and celebrity Messengers of Peace including Muhammad Ali, Michael Douglas, Jane Goodall and Elie Wiesel, as well as videoconferencing with children that had recently experienced war.
A powerful activity on the International Day of Peace is the Minute of Silence at 12 o’clock in every time zone as it circles the globe. Gather around a Peace Pole or just pause wherever you are.
Join with countless peace lovers all over the world in the universal prayer “May Peace Prevail on Earth.”
Offer a thought for Peace, offer a prayer for Peace, offer a word to Peace, offer your action to Peace, offer to the whole world PEACE!
