United States of America (Press Release) September 20, 2007 --
Sept. 20, 2007 — The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance has launched a national, online video contest, Facing Us. The contest is a part of a larger campaign aimed at putting a real face on depression and bipolar disorder, two illnesses that affect as many as 35 million Americans.
The campaign consists of three distinct contests: a video contest where contestants can submit a personalized submission about living with these illnesses, an art contest symbolizing an individual's emotions while living with depression and a Public Service Announcement contest for film students and production studios.
Details, rules, contest instructions and promotional videos can be found on the FacingUs.org website. The deadline for submissions is October 24, 2007.
Promotional video clips include award-winning actress and playwright Victoria Maxwell bringing wit and humor to the campaign with her clip on dating and relationships while living with bipolar disorder.
A total of $7,000 will be awarded in the form of 29 cash prizes for the best personal video stories, original artwork and creative PSAs. The goal of the campaign is to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental illness by helping people understand that these are real, medical and treatable illnesses. Winners of the video and artwork contest will be notified by phone and e-mail on November 1, 2007, and the winning selections will be posted on FacingUs.org.
"Although depression and bipolar disorder are illnesses that touch the lives of so many people; including family members, friends, colleagues and acquaintances, they are still misunderstood and greatly stigmatized," said DBSA President Sue Bergeson. "We have created Facing Us because research shows that the only thing that seems to put a dent in the stigma is not education; not shame, not blame, but instead, putting a real face on the illness."
During November, DBSA will launch phase two of the campaign with the introduction of an online club site that houses positive wellness tools and resources for anyone living with depression or bipolar disorder. The site will feature personal journals, recovery tips, wellness plans, e-cards and customizable wellness books. Visitors to the site can also view the winning video and art contest entries.
