PAM's "MARCH FOR DEMOCRACY" A HUGE SUCCESS
Basseterre, St.Kitts (September 13th 2007);-The Peoples Action Movement organised March for Democracy has been labelled a huge success by organisers, marchers and curious onlookers of the September 13th Historical event. Thousands took to the streets of Basseterre to be counted in defense of a fair and credible electoral system. The crowd was one of the the largest if not the largest for a demonstration march in St.Kitts-Nevis in recent history. The crowd was vocally supportive as the speakers in the march including Leader of the Opposition Peoples Action Movement Lawyer Lindsay Grant and MP Hon. Shawn Richards heaped much deserved opprobrium on the Denzil Douglas Administration for its blatant contempt for the democratic process. There is little doubt that this march will be a pivotal moment in the history of the Federation. It is difficult to remember the last time there was a similar public outpouring of political feeling . The march winded its way through the street of the capital Basseterre with Antiguan Road March champions the Burning Flames taking second billing to the more serious concern of the amrch which was a fair, just and credible electoral reform. "From watching the march, Labour is in trouble," said a curious onlooker to the march. "I have not been living here long but I could see that people are fed up with the over bearing stances of the Labour Party. When the people speak it is serious and the people are speaking now," noted a bystander who was observing the march. Another one who claims to be a Labour supporter chimed in and stated that his Party needs to "pull up its socks." "They really doing everything possible to turn away supporters and "Dougie" needs to step up for them to regain thepeople’s favour said another onlooker.".The Peoples’ Action Movement has one seat in the House of Parliament. Following the march through the streets of Basseterre, the PAM and its supporters congregated at Bank Street to engage in a rally. Various representatives from the Party addressed the crowd and spurred them on to keep supporting the "fight for democracy." Political observers have categorised the march as a victory for PAM and it is seen as a clear indicator that the party has regained the popularity it enjoyed in the 80's when the party held the reigns of power in the country.
