Santiago de Cuba is the second most important city on the beautiful island of Cuba and has been attracting visitors from all over the world for many years now. This is hardly surprising with so much to see and do and exceptional scenery that will never be forgotten.
Narrow, winding streets with large windows and crowded balconies attract visitors who are intrigued by the sound of music coming from them. Unique architecture also entices tourists who can’t help but want to know more about the country they are in.
The Bacardi Rum Factory was one of Cuba’s first museums and in it contains a valuable collection of artefacts from the period between the Spanish conquest and the Wars of Independence. Visitors are often amazed by the Cuban and European paintings that
are displayed as well as the only Egyptian mummy to be found in Cuba.
Castillo El Morro sees many tourists every year and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It guards the entrance to the Bahia de Santiago and contains many platforms and passages over five different levels. The site was originally built to protect against pirate attacks but is now visited for its sights and daily ceremony called the Puesta del Sol.
Tourists and locals alike often find themselves heading towards Cespedes Park in Down Town Santiago. People go there for a range of reasons including having a chat with friends or to cool down from the hot sun.
Santiago’s Carnival is the most famous one in Cuba. However, visitors who are not there for the events visit the Museo del
Carnaval as it provides the historical reasoning behind the festival. Old costumes, photos, masks and capes are all on display which gives a real feeling that you are at the carnival. Music and dance events are regularly held at the museum so those who don’t get to go to the carnival don’t feel left out.
Visitors couldn’t possible take a trip to Santiago de Cuba without going to one of the stunning beaches it boasts. Playa Lindamar beach is a particular favourite and is small, friendly and private so overcrowding isn’t an issue. The shore is shaped like a shell and is surrounded by white boulders which gives this beach a unique feel.
With beautiful scenery, an interesting history and great beaches it is no surprise that Cuba is becoming a holiday hot spot for travellers all around the world.
