Canada (Press Release) September 27, 2007 --
Learning for a Cause is a non-profit educational project devoted to publishing the creative writing of students on topics of social concern. In 2007 Learning for a Cause published "IF: The Anthology" a collection of students writing on poverty, war, violence and other social justice issues. The book was an instant success!
Learning for a Cause was founded in 2004 by noted educator and writer Michael Ernest Sweet as a way to better connect living and learning. "When I began teaching in 2003 I noticed one very disturbing thing. We were asking students to be creative, to think critically, to produce intellectual output, and then we were tossing it to the recycle bin in June. So many poignant and valid thoughts lost to the outside world. I aimed to change this and fast forward four years and we have Learning for a Cause growing by the day. In fact, this November I will be speaking at the 6th Annual Worldwide Forum on Education and Culture in Rome, Italy."
Learning for a Cause has a two-fold mandate. 1) To operate our projects at Lester B. Pearson High School in Montreal and 2) To promote our projects to other educators around the globe and have them come on board with our projects.
Creative writing and the imagination are important factors in our quest for a socially just society. Quite simply imagining a different world - a better one - is the first step in bring about that world; in bringing about meaningful change.
No more having students write for the recycle bin, Learning for a Cause is radically changing how we approach creative writing in public schooling. No longer do students come to school to merely learn, they now come to school to Learn for a Cause.
Learning for a Cause has already published two full-length collections of student writing - IF: The Anthology and Per Sempre. In 2008 a new title "Down to Earth" will be released featuring poems, plays, short stories, and essays on our environment and the urgent need to protect it.
"Our youth are producing some of the most poignant and authentic intellectual output in our society. It needs to be heard loud and wide; it needs to be published!" said Michael Sweet.
