Singapore, Republic of (Press Release) September 28, 2007 --
Senthil, an 8 year old boy, became very ill one day and doctors diagnosed him with full-blown HIV/AIDS. He has skin infections from his head to his toes with open wounds all over his body. Doctors initially gave Senthil 2 years to live and his illness is now kept under control by lifesaving medications.
He was separated from his mother since she "dropped him off" at Shelter, a home for HIV-positive children in Chennai, India. He loves to draw, likes Mickey Mouse and wants to be a policeman when he grows up.
Senthil shares a letter:
Dear Sir,
My name is Senthil. I am 8 years old. I am very sick. My mother is also very sick. She has put me in a home with many children just like me who are my friends now. I do not know why she put me her and my Sir (a caretaker from Shelter) does not tell me why. My body was very painful and itchy at first but I feel ok now because my home gives me medicine to eat.
Many times, I wonder why I am not like normal children who are happy and not sick. I cry not because I am not like them, but because I miss my Ma (Hindi for "mother").
Now, my home takes care of me and I can play with my friends and go to class to learn many things.
I still do not know where my Ma is. I hope to see her one day as I miss her very much.
Thank you.
Stories of Hope
Senthil's story is just one of many in Chennai, India, where the HIV/AIDS crisis has impacted the entire social structure, creating a generation of orphans and vulnerable children.
