KANSAS CITY, MO. (September 28, 2007) – Hurricane season is still upon us, but hurricanes are hardly the only natural disasters the American Red Cross is prepared to handle. Each year, the Red Cross responds immediately to more than 70,000 disasters, including house or apartment fires, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous materials spills, transportation accidents, explosions, and other natural and man-made disasters. And the Red Cross relies on portable storage containers to prepare for the next emergency.
"We have 160 containers pre-positioned around Los Angeles. Each of these containers contain food, water and other supplies to help up to 500 people," explains Nick Samaniego, senior associate, Los Angeles Red Cross. "We are not going to be able to move things if infrastructure is damaged after a major earthquake. If the American Red Cross could not use these containers it would impact us negatively. Across the nation we use containers for all of our disaster response needs on premise and otherwise. These containers are a great asset for us."
The Los Angeles Red Cross puts its logo on the white containers and keeps them in strategic locations, such as schools, recreation centers, parks, and other places where people gather after a major disaster. In other parts of the country, such as Louisiana, these portable storage containers are used as actual housing shelters for disaster victims that have been displaced from their home.
"Portable storage containers are coming to the rescue of rescuers like the American Red Cross," says John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director the National Portable Storage Association, or NPSA, a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. "Our industry is proud to partner with the Red Cross to help people in need. It's just one more way that our members strive to make life and business safer and more secure."
