A new book, The Treaty, written by author David J Grant, makes the prediction The Queen and Prince Charles will have to join Prince Philip together with Princess Anne, Princes Andrew and Edward to live in exile after a catastrophic royal scandal. The date set for this major upheaval in the British constitution is July 1, 2011 – Princess Diana’s 50th birthday.
A secret treaty agreed more than three decades earlier by The Queen’s husband and Consort Prince Philip and President Richard Nixon, is the cause of these two countries plunging into political and economic chaos. The Treaty, based on a plan put forward by the Prince together with his uncle Lord Mountbatten in 1969, resulting in huge sums of money totalling more than ten billion dollars accruing in secret bank accounts for the sole benefit of Philip and his family. Princess Diana, aware of the treaty and its global implications, left instructions that the full content of this secret accord be revealed on her 50th birthday, whilst knowing this would wreck the monarchy. In his novel “The Treaty”, to be published by Samosir Books on 30 October 2007, David J Grant casts these well-known individuals in this real-people-fiction story. Grant has engineered a plot that may have some underlying truths leading to results that were perhaps not intended by the political architects back in the 1960’s. The actions taken by President Nixon and his successors, supported by British leaders, did not stop the anticipated growth in drug use and may have inadvertently led to a boom creating a new currency - the Narco Dollar – now underpinning the global economy. So severe is our dependency on narcotics and the cash generated by this hugely profitable industry, any attempt to wipe it out could result in the collapse of the US dollar and subsequently the British pound. According to Grants with 95% of the world’s supply of opium coming only from Afghanistan, he argues western governments no longer have any choice but to take complete control of the narcotics industry - using their armies when necessary.
The central plot is the claim that both the USA and Britain are controlling the sale and production of narcotics on a global basis. Linking Britain's drug dealing history and the control and influence governments and individuals has over markets for illegal drugs. He builds his story based on research conducted by the United Nations and the illegal drugs industry, said to be worth more than $300 billion dollars a year at retail level and with 93% of all opiates now coming from Afghanistan. Grant's highly believable story is supported by daily news coming from the Middle East region and the continuing war on terror.
The author admitted that when he began writing his book he based it on the historic fact that Britain was a leading supplier of opium for 150 years until the beginning of the twentieth century. Often disturbing, his story involves both murder and tragedy introducing real life characters in the plot. The reader gains a new insight into the personality and early life of Prince Philip before he married The Queen. Grant sets out the case stating why such a high profile man could have been involved in a scheme such as The Treaty. We discover Prince Philip had a disturbing and lonely childhood with a high degree of insecurity, which stemmed from his own family background. We find it possible to empathize with the Prince and can comprehend how he would easily have become involved in a conspiracy given the circumstances in Grants novel. Other important characters include both American Presidents Nixon and George Bush Senior.
After a dramatic introduction in the first chapter the story moves to the home of publisher Dominic Marsh, which happens to be situated right on the edge of Princess Diana's former family estate in England. (This is material later in the story) Here we meet a young Argentinean au pair called Maria Farnese and Andrew Davies. Andy (as he is called throughout the book) is a good-looking thirty something telecoms specialist, who, while travelling home unexpectedly meets with Maria during a violent thunderstorm. Davies suffers a minor injury to his foot, caused by Maria and agrees to her offer of a bed for the night. This happens to coincide with the same weekend her boss and his wife are staying away. During the same night Andy makes a discovery finding a copy of The Treaty. Intrigued and only later does he realize the significance of the documents and from here on events move fast. In the course of a few days he travels to Europe and a little later to the Far East. During each journey Andy has a new experience leading to the eventual tragic death of his close friend. At a new low point in his life he is more convinced than ever that he must prove these documents are for real. To do this he has to discover the location of the actual signed authentic copy, which from evidence now in his procession he’s certain exists. Unfortunately, Andy is not alone in the search there are other more powerful people who need to keep the lid on this secret accord. While he continues to gather new information he grows increasingly aware of how high up the establishment ladder in both the USA and Britain; he will have to rise to reach the real decision makers behind The Treaty. As dark forces emerge life becomes untenable and never knowing who he can trust. It’s a relief when he finally meets with the feisty Ms Caroline Lovelace-Jones. A member of the British secret services working for MI-21 and the Bureau Chief of their Madrid office, Caroline will be popular with women of all ages.
Grant’s novel is both exciting and fast paced, totally believable and smudges the line between fact and fiction, probably confirming what many readers already think they know is true. His characters and plot are original and by the end, you feel very close to both Andy as a person and to some of the people in his life. The locations and scenery are equally unusual especially in Asia, and may stimulate readers to go off in search of these out of the way places.
