Canada (Press Release) October 1, 2007 --
Victoria, BC – for immediate release
In 1995, Bruce Batchelor rocked the publishing world when he invented print-on-demand [POD] publishing. During 2007, about 30,000 new authors will pay POD services such as AuthorHouse, Lulu, Trafford and Xlibris to distribute their writings. This market niche now generates sales of about $200 million annually.
After 11 years as CEO at Trafford Publishing, Batchelor left to work on how all those “indie authors” can be successful at SELLING their books in cost-efficient and environmentally-friendly ways. Batchelor’s solutions are revealed in his new book, Book Marketing DeMystified: Enjoy Discovering the Optimal Way to Sell Your Self-Published Book! [ISBN 978-1-897435-00-7; trade paperback; Agio Publishing House]. Hardcover, eBook, audio and German language editions will be released this fall.
“I interviewed over 100 authors and industry experts to determine the best practices and the leading edge ideas,” says Batchelor. “The authors were wonderfully frank, making it clear which tactics really didn’t work and which gave solid payback for the time and money invested.”
In Book Marketing DeMystified each aspect of marketing is explained using authors’ anecdotes. Many have sold thousands of books in creative ways; one sold over 1 million copies without selling any copies in bookstores.
“This is a wonderful era for indie authors,” says Batchelor. “So many effective, low-cost tactics are available. For example, an audio book can be recorded by the author using a PC with a microphone, then broadcast as podcast episodes. A video trailer is also relatively simple to home produce. Why not host a blog too?”
In his book, Batchelor comes down hard on the publishing industry’s impact on the environment. Although the print-on-demand process minimizes waste because each copy is printed individually after a customer buys it, the majority of all books published are printed in large quantities, much of which is wasted. The culprit, according to Batchelor, is the standard ‘returnable’ book terms whereby a bookstore can order copies essentially on a risk-free, 90-day consignment basis.
“One misguided large purchase by a major bookstore chain can bankrupt a smaller publisher. Returnability raises the retail price for those copies that are sold.”
“The typical percentage of returned books is between 40% and 80% of the print run! This shocking waste is harmful to the environment, wasting trees and fossil fuels in printing and then trucking the books all around the continent between warehouses and retail stores and back again. Making paper is the world’s second largest industrial user of fresh water, and the publishing industry is squandering that precious, limited resource.”
“In this era of climate change and widespread environmental concern, it is inexcusable to blatantly overprint.”
Book Marketing DeMystified is the first book from Agio Publishing House, a new venture by Batchelor and his designer wife, Marsha Batchelor.
