United States of America (Press Release) October 2, 2007 --
Fox Lake, IL –October 2, 2007—With a flair for the unique, Stacey (Barnes) Klemstein will step into the spotlight and offer her fellow alumni a fantastic adventure with her recently released science fiction novel, “The Silver Spoon.” On October 6, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Stacey Klemstein, Class of 1997, will sign copies of her first novel at the Valparaiso University Book Center.
Klemstein’s novel is the first in a trilogy that tells the story of Zara Mitchell, a young woman struggling with the purpose for her life in the wake of aliens landing on Earth.
“The theme I wanted to explore with this series was what if you were called to be someone greater than you ever thought possible…and you weren’t too keen on the idea,” Klemstein says. She claims influences from science fiction sources such as Star Wars, Star Trek and the short-lived television series Roswell.
Aliens Among Us
Zara Mitchell's nightmares began when the Observers landed. These strangely vivid visions still haunt her nightly and leave her terrified of the silver-eyed visitors and their true intentions. When one of the eerily beautiful beings shows up at her diner with the local sheriff, her world changes forever. The Observer insists that she come with him. He claims her life is in danger. But can he be trusted?
A Prophecy Fulfilled
After two years, Caelan's search is finally over. He's found her, the human female from the prophecy. She is the one thing he recognizes from his life before Earth. His only link to the truth. Now all he has to do is keep her alive long enough to find the clues to a past he can't remember and a future she fears.
“Though this is a commercial and secular novel, with my background in theology from Valpo, I drew on ideas like the conflict of free will and destiny as well as stories of reluctant leaders, like Moses.” She laughs. “That sounds really intellectual and high-minded, but really, it’s just a fun science fiction adventure.”
The daughter of a Lutheran minister and a teacher, Stacey never found any shortage of books in her house or people to read to her (though her mother swears she still has most of Little House on the Prairie memorized from reading it aloud so often). Stacey created her first story before she could even write, dictating it to her mother, who jotted it down on a paper bag.
Her father introduced her to science fiction with Star Wars and seven episodes of the original Star Trek series on tapes that she watched over and over again. Always being the new kid in school helped, too. Stacey entertained herself by making up stories, mostly about being a princess from another planet hidden among the humans for her own safety. Even now, she still wonders about that!
She currently lives in the Chicago suburbs with her husband, Greg, and two retired racing greyhounds, Joezooka and Tall Walker.
