United Kingdom of Great Britain & N. Ireland (Press Release) October 5, 2007 --
Struggling to find books with simple phonic vocabulary which will spark an interest in reading for your early reader or dyslexic child? Help is at hand with the launch of Nessy Tales - a series of five animated books aimed at children aged 5-8 and also older learners with dyslexia. Available to download at http://www.NessyTales.co.uk/ , the first tale called Muggins is absolutely free!
Narrated by comedian Bill Bailey of Never Mind the Buzzcocks, the stories feature the adventures of Nan, Jim and their dog who live in a village in the mythical land of Ness. The books use a vocabulary of just 100 carefully chosen words so children will quickly be able to read them on their own. There is also extra support in the form of free printable resources to improve recall and comprehension.
Nessy Tales is the brainchild of teacher Mike Jones, who struggled with reading and dyslexia himself and has put his experiences to good use. Mike commented, “Early learners and children with dyslexic tendencies often enjoy computer games but find reading very tiring. Nessy Tales is an important bridge between playing online games and reading. The listening option provides children with a much needed opportunity to relax and helps them to make the vital transference from single words to contextual reading.”
Children are fascinated by sounds, from baby babble to nursery rhymes and songs. So it makes sense to exploit these skills when a young child is learning to read. Phonic knowledge is the bedrock of reading. Yet all too often parents struggle to find books with simple phonic vocabulary which will spark an interest in reading. Many books have eye catching graphics but the vocabulary level is too high. This causes frustration and can foster a sense of failure.
All five stories have been trialled at the Bristol Dyslexia Centre where they have been well received. The animation has proved particularly popular, introducing a fun element which many children find very motivating. Visual learners start to associate words with particular images and this accelerates their reading skills.
Download Muggins at http://www.nessytales.co.uk/ and enjoy one story for free. The Nessy Tales bundle of 5 books costs just £7.99.
