India, Republic of (Press Release) October 9, 2007 --
With increasing waiting times and the prohibitive cost of seeking private medical treatment in the west, many patients are now seeking treatment in India. There is a large number of patients waiting for a hospital bed in the UK and 45-million plus uninsured in the US. India offers some of the best medical treatments in the world and has experienced a boom in recent years in patients or 'medical tourists’. Healthcare facilities in India are among the most cost effective in the world, with private hospitals and clinics offering treatments at a fraction of the price offered by private hospitals in the UK
When Glenys Owram, 62, decided to undergo cosmetic surgery, little did she expect that her dream would take her thousands of miles away to India. She wanted to look young again as age was taking toll on her face. She is a beauty expert and hair dresser herself and is running a saloon at Midlands, UK. Her profession required her to be looking young to stay competitive in business as it is difficult to get more clients if she as a beauty expert herself is looking older.
Her research, for Cost effective packages and excellent facility, led her to India. The cost of Face and neck lift surgery with eyelid surgery is approx 10000 pounds in UK while it is about 2000 in India. She decided to get her surgery from Dr K M Kapoor, Senior Consultant and Head, Dept. of Cosmetic Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Mohali as he had already operated many patients from UK successfully before. She reached Mohali on 28th September after the brief vacation in Rajsthan. She underwent all the necessary tests and anesthesia evaluation on the same day. She was operated upon on 29th September and her facelift, neck lift and eyelids tightening of both sides were done. Post operatively, she recovered quickly and were on her feet on the very next day. After 2 days, she was discharged from the hospital. She managed to go to Amritsar to see Golden Temple just 4 days after surgery.
She is all praise for Dr K M Kapoor for his expertise and personal touch in managing cosmetic surgery patients. She also appreciated the nurses as well as the facilities at Fortis Hospital. She said that when she goes back to her saloon again, she will tell her friends and clients about her good experience with Indian healthcare and hospitality.
Medical tourism (MT) is the next big thing in India after IT success. According to a study by CII-Mckinsey, the revenue generation from Medical Tourism is expected to touch approx 2 billion US dollars in India by 2011.
