United States of America (Press Release) October 9, 2007 --
The new TSA rules now require that CPAP machines be removed from their bags and be treated in the same fashion as laptop computers. This is a major inconvienence to travelers, especially frequent fliers who do not check baggage.
An article in Sleep and Health Journal details the new rules and discusses options for travelers. Some CPAP users opt to leave the CPAP at home however this option carries significant risks. See Sleep and Health article:

An alternative to going without treatment is to use oral appliances as a CPAP Alternative when you travel. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recognizes oral appliances as a first line of treatment along with CPAP for mild to moderate sleep apnea and as a CPAP alternative for patients with severe apnea who do not tolerate CPAP. Dr Shapira has found that many patients who recieve oral appliances for travel use switch to full time appliance use because of increased comfort. A majority of patients who have tried both therapies prefer oral appliances.
Dr Ira L Shapira teaches courses to dentists to help them recognize sleep apnea and treat it with the help of accredited sleep labs and sleep physicians. To learn more about his courses for dentists on Sleep Apnea Treatment and Neuromuscular Dentistry contact him BY PHONE at
