India, Republic of (Press Release) October 15, 2007 --
The Cornea Clinic at Apollo Health City, Hyderabad, has recently introduced INTACS procedure for treatment of Keratoconus disorder of the cornea, for the first time in the state of Andhra Pradesh. This comes a year after this clinic introduced, collagen crosslinking treatment for Keratoconus, for the first time in India.
Keratoconus is a disorder of the cornea, (clear watchglass like structure in front of the eye) characterized by progressive thinning and forward protrusion, resulting in abnormal shape which produces visual distortion. Collagen crosslinking treatment (C3R) helps arrest further progression but does not completely revert the corneal shape back to normal.
INTACS prescription inserts are tiny plastic segments made of PMMA (same material used in intraocular lenses for cataract surgery) that are placed inside the cornea in a painless manner. These segments work by reshaping the cornea and thereby correcting its refraction to achieve optimal vision. This procedure of placing INTACS inserts in the cornea does not involve cutting or removal of tissue from the cornea’s central optical zone. The INTACS procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting using drops to numb the eye. The total procedure for one eye, is usually completed in less than one hour.
INTACS inserts are designed to remain permanently in the eye, yet they can also be removed or replaced if desired. The goal of treatment in most cases of INTACS procedure is to allow successful fitting of contact lenses or glasses again, to restore vision without resorting to corneal surgical procedure. INTACS prescription inserts are currently CE marked and FDA approved.
Combination of INTACS prescription inserts and Collagen Crosslinking procedure is often ideal as one tend to improve the shape of the cornea, whereas the other arrests further progression of keratoconus.
