FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, Monday, October 22, 2007.
TORONTO – Elaborately decorated and bejeweled plaster torsos reminiscent of ancient Rome, are in fact the work of living Canadian artists working to raise funds for breast cancer research and to raise public awareness on breast health issues. On October 22nd Curator and lead artist Christa Gampp and 10 guest artists will unveil the Chest of Hope project in a silent auction and celebration at the historic Gladstone Hotel.
The Chest of Hope torso art project was brought to life by Christa Gampp in 2006, after witnessing her mother falling victim to breast cancer. Using the arts as a means to support the search for a cure, the artist set out to create torso casts of volunteer models. These caring volunteers came from all walks of life; they were mothers, daughters, teachers, artists, therapists, and women who had breast cancer and are thriving.
All plaster torso casts have been transformed into original works of art and the public is encouraged to bid on these unique torso sculptures. The artworks hang on the wall like a painting and make a great addition to peoples’ homes or office décor.
Participating guest artists are Rachael Abah-Roth (Toronto), Françoise Mallecourt Cockburn (Toronto), Marina Dempster (Toronto), Tasse Geldart (Scarborough), Nepher Lewis (Scarborough), Diane Lingenfelter (Toronto), Tanya MacFarlane (Toronto), Rob Matejka (Toronto), Suzanne Myers (Owen Sound), Andrea Piller (Toronto), and Julia White (Owen Sound).
The event will include a collaborative Pink Scarf Knitting Project to foster a sense of community and support among women during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Pink Scarf has traveled through the hands of knitters from several countries and will become an interactive installation during the exhibition.
