United States of America (Press Release) October 22, 2007 --
Onion Breath is a funny, colorful story of two picky eaters and their quirky nanny, who convinces them to try new things. The book delights children with its hand-made pictures and clever rhymes. And it introduces them to atheism in a matter-of-fact reference that establishes it as a normal part of life.
Onion Breath simply mentions that the characters in the story are all atheists. This approach is designed to educate kids that there are people out there who are not religious. It isn’t a how-to book or an atheist primer. If the kids who read the story learn that there are atheists around them, and that it is not a problem, the book will have been successful. If they also notice that the atheists in the story are fun, and the atheist authors are funny and creative, the story may help change people’s impression of non-believers as dry scientists without a sense of fun or whimsy.
Onion Breath has been very well received by both children and adults. The authors donated a box of books to last summer’s Camp Quest Secular Summer Camp. Amanda Metskas, Camp Quest’s Executive Director, reviewed Onion Breath for the Institute for Humanist Studies’ Humanist Network News. She said “I highly recommend this book to parents, regardless of their worldview, who are looking for a fun story to read with their kids…Whether it helps normalize atheism in broader society will depend on it being carried by libraries and bookstores, and being read by families who do not identify as atheists.” (http://www.humaniststudies.org/enews/?id=318&article=2)
The authors and publishers urge librarians to consider Onion Breath for their collections. It’s a fun, colorful story, and it addresses a potentially divisive current issue. Children need to see that normal people are non-believers, just as normal people are black, white, straight, gay, conservative, and liberal. Onion Breath helps kids take a step into a wider world. The final page, titled “Tolerance is Learned,” reinforces this important theme.
