FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) October 22, 2007 --
Sleep apnea is a serious medical condition and CPAP is the most commonly prescribed treatment. CPAP is very effective but only if it is used on a regular basis. According to Chicago, Il area dentist the problem is that less than half of the patients prescribed CPAP actually use it on a regular basis.
CPAP needs to be worn 7 1/2 hours for effectiveness according to information presented at the sleep meetings in June 2007. Not using CPAP has dire consequences. Patients with untreated apnea have a six fold increase in motor vehicle accidents and a 300% increase in motor vehicle accidents involving serious physical injury. Dr Shapira would love to see a group like MADD, the mothers against drunk driving take up the banner of drowsy driving that is deadlier on our nations roads than drunk driving.
Heart disease, high blood pressure, increases in heart attacks and strokes are just a few of the serious medical consequences of untreated sleep apnea. A story in Sleep and Health Journal discusses oral appliances vs CPAP for treating sleep apnea.

Additional information on sleep apnea is available www.ihatecpap.com IHATE CPAP LLC was founded by Gurnee, Illinois dentist to promote oral appliance use to patients who do not use or do not like CPAP. I don't have a problem with CPAP say Dr Shapira, I have a problem with the multitudes of patients who say I HATE CPAP! and are not offered comfortable alternatives. Oral appliances are not the cure for everyone but they are considered a first line of treatment along with CPAP for patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea and an alternative to cpap for patients with severe apnea who cannot tolerate CPAP. This is the position the American Academy of Sleep Medicine though if you talk to patients many were never offered a choice.
