Australia, Commonwealth of (Press Release) October 28, 2007 --
Lili Tuwai’s first book, ‘the heArt of my reVersing: a redemption song through original poems and short stories in verse’ extends the paradigms for representation for writers like herself who are also survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Keen to reach a wider readership without constraints to her creative expression, Tuwai’s recent decision to publish with Vusa Wai Tui Publishing, a small independent publisher, and Lulu.com (premier marketplace for digital content) has been exciting and liberating.
Whilst the topics in Tuwai’s verses are eclectic, a strong theme throughout the book is a stand against all forms of abusive behaviour that permeates daily life. She responds to the off-field antics of professional footballers’; and ponders a child’s confusion after sexual assault; she spells out the mind-numbing effect of neighbourhood gossip and argy-bargy; and the things we say and do ‘for heavens sake’; and the ugliness of a drunk verbally abusing his wife.
Tuwai hopes this collection will benefit survivors (of abuse) and the broader community alike. “I hope survivors will feel less alone when reading the verses. I also hope people who have not suffered such abuses, gain insight into issues many survivors live with” said Tuwai. Although this is her first book, she has published widely as a journalist and academic. Her articles have appeared in Rollingstone Magazine, Juice Magazine, Icon, Pacific Islands Monthly, Like Art Magazine and Xtext Journal to name just a few. She has also worked as a stringer for Inter Press Newswire Service.
the heArt of my reVersing is available for purchase on-line at Lulu.com (http://www.lulu.com/content/1191966).

A generation ago talking publicly about childhood sexual abuse and other forms of abuse were frowned upon and the abused were often left alone to feel the shame of their ordeal and cope in silence.
