Wilkes-Barre, PA – From That Flame by MaryAnn T. Beverly is an historical fiction novel that casts much needed light on the life of Afghan resistance leader Ahmed Shah Massoud. Massoud was the Commander of the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan and battled against the Taliban and al-Qaeda in an attempt to free his country of the totalitarian regimes. His assassination was the prelude to the September 11 attacks on the US that resulted in the destruction of the World Trade Center.
“When I discovered that Massoud's military genius was blended with a heart whose passion was Persian poetry and freedom for his homeland, the idea of a story that could display the multiple facets of the man was born.” The quest to know the man who battled the Taliban and al-Qaeda lead Ms. Beverly to years of research and interviews, including one with Massoud’s brother the Honorable Ahmad Wali Massoud, who is the Afghan Ambassador to Great Britain.
The result is a novel best described as a well-researched blend of fact and credible fiction. “It is my hope that you not only get to know Massoud as the ‘Lion of Panjshir,’ the leader, the military genius; but that you get to know Ahmed Shah Massoud — the man.”
From that Flame follows the journey of female journalist Michelle Garrett into Afghanistan’s rugged Hindu Kush Mountains as she interviews the legendary Commander Massoud. As the novel progresses, a friendship between the journalist and the Afghan commander grows, giving her a unique perspective into the man the Wall Street Journal credited as “the Afghan who ended the Cold War.”
A portion of the author’s proceeds from the sale of From that Flame will go to the Ahmed Shah Massoud Foundation to help the people of Afghanistan. From That Flame is available in bookstores nationwide and online. For more information about From That Flame, please visit www.fromthatflame.com or contact Kallisti Publishing.
