United States of America (Press Release) October 31, 2007 --
CPAP has long been considered the Gold Standard of Treatment for obstructive sleep apnea but The American Academy of Sleep Medicine now considers the comfortable oral appliance alternative a first line of treatment for mild to moderate apnea. This change came about because research show oral appliances work for mild to moderate apnea and are preferred by most patients who are offered a choice. The AASM also considers comfortable oral appliances a CPAP Alternative for patients who do not tolerate CPAP.
There are plenty of patients who do not tolerate CPAP. Studies have shown that only 23-42% of patients use CPAP on a regular basis and many of them do not wear them on a regular basis.
Untreated Sleep apnea drastically increases the risks of heart attacks and strokes, is implicated in Alzheimer’s and short-term memory loss. Patients with untreated apnea have slower reaction times than patients who are legally drunk and mild to moderate apneics have a 300% increase in Motor Vehicle Accidents involving serious bodily injury. Next week is drowsy driving awareness week.
Dr Ira L Shapira a Chicago area Dentist who practices in Gurnee, IL has formed I HATE CPAP LLC a Company dedicated to finding CPAP Alternatives for patients who do not tolerate CPAP. Dr Shapira is a Charter and Credentialed member of the Sleep Disorder Dental Society, which became the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine and a member of the AASM and the AADSM. He is a founding member of DOSA, the dental organization for Sleep Apnea. His website www.ihatecpap.com is helping patients across the country find sleep apnea dentists who treat patients with comfortable oral appliances.
