US asphalt demand to reach 38.5 million tons by 2011
Demand for asphalt in the United States is projected to increase 2.3 percent annually from 2006 to 38.5 million tons in 2011. This represents a considerable improvement over the performance posted in the 2001- 2006 period, when a drop-off in road construction negatively impacted demand for paving products, the dominant end use for asphalt. Demand for asphalt will also benefit from the increasing use of new paving technologies, such as in-place recycling, microsurfacing and chip seal technologies. Asphalt cement will remain the dominant asphalt paving product. Continuing adoption of performance-based specifications for road projects will generate demand for polymermodified asphalts.
Paving asphalt to remain dominant, grow the fastest
Paving represents the largest single application for asphalt, accounting for 82 percent of total demand in 2006. Demand in paving will post the fastest growth through 2011, proceeding from a relatively weak 2006 base, primarily because high fuel and raw materials costs exerted significant pressure on public road and highway construction projects. As pricing pressures ease, increased paving activity will ensue, boosting overall asphalt demand. Demand for asphalt in roofing applications will increase due to a rebound in nonresidential construction activity, which will benefit roofing felts and mopping asphalt used in low-slope roofing constructions. Demand for asphalt used in shingles, the largest single roofing outlet for asphalt, will soften through 2011, reflecting weakening single-family home construction.
