United States of America (Press Release) November 10, 2007 --
Millions of patients have been prescribed CPAP to treat sleep apnea and snoring. Unfortunately less that half of those patients actually use their CPAP. Many of the patients who do use it wear it for less than the recommended 7 1/2 hours a night. These patients go thru their lives with a greater risk of death and disability.
According to JAMA patients who snore have a three-fold increase in Motor Vehicle Accidents. Patients with untreated sleep apnea have a six-fold increase in motor vehicle accidents. A recent study showed patients with mild apnea and no symptoms of daytime tiredness had a 300% increase in motor vehicle accidents involving serious physical injury. The figures are frightening because there are millions with undiagnosed and untreated sleep apnea driving on our highways. The main reason for this is that a majority of patients hate the standard treatment. I Hate CPAP! is a familiar cry of the untreated sleep apneic.
Dr James Loye of San Diego, California area has decided to do something about it. He has become educated in Dental Sleep Medicine. As a Sleep Apnea Dentist he is prepared to work with patients, their physicians and sleep labs to obtain comfortable treatment that patients actually use on a nightly basis. It is vital that all patients working with comfortable oral appliances to treat their apnea have follow-up sleep tests to confirm they are working and to titrate the appliances or adjust them to the most effective position.
Spouses of Snorers lose up to 15% of their sleep and that adversely affects their health. If you love your partner do not let them ignore their problems. Patients with untreated apnea are more likely to die in their sleep than exercising and have a greatly increased risk of heart attacks and stokes.
Dr Ira L Shapira, A Gurnee Illinois dentist founded I HATE CPAP! LLC and the web site www.ihatecpap.com to bring comfortable oral appliance therapy to millions of Americans.
Please See Sleep and Health Journal for more information on sleep apnea and treatment using oral appliances. Oral Appliances are accepted by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as an alternative to CPAP for mild to moderate apnea and for severe apnea when patients do not tolerate CPAP.
