GUINNESS WORLD RECORD OFFICIAL PRESENTATION
“Biggest recorded mobilisation on any one issue in history is powerful call to end poverty”
Milan, 13th Nov., 2007: Today in Milan Guinness World Records representative Frank Chambers presented the official Guinness World Record Certificate for the record broken for the largest number of people to Stand Up Against Poverty on October 17th, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The certificate was received by the organisers, the UN Millennium Campaign and the Global Call to Action Against Poverty alliance in recognition of the biggest recorded 24-hour mobilisation on any one issue in history.
Speaking at the presentation in Milan, Frank Chambers, representing Guinness World records said, “Guinness World records is delighted to confirm this new world record. It is truly a massive global achievement unparalleled in sheer numbers and scope. The UN Millennium Campaign and GCAP have established a phenomenal record but have also created a platform from which the people at the grassroots can demand action and remind their leaders of their promises .”
This massive participation, mostly from poor countries in the global South, is a powerful representation of the growing global awareness and support for holding world leaders to account for promises to end poverty, tackle inequality and meet the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
“This record is a powerful call from people all over the world on one issue - ending the crushing, inexcusable poverty that allows 50,000 people to die of preventable causes every day. The significance of the record is to show that our movement is growing, from 23.5 million last year to a staggering 43.7m this year. When are the politicians that serve these people going to respond with the same force civil society is clearly showing?” asked Kumi Naidoo, Chair of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty form South Africa in Milan today.
Salil Shetty, Director of the Millennium Campaign added, “Stand Up and Speak Out represents 43.7 million voices reminding their leaders of their promises on achieving the MDGS at the local, national and international levels”.
