Author Pat Nelson Childs continues to deliver on his promise to bring strong, endearing gay heroes to the largely heterocentric realm of Fantasy fiction. While the second installment of his “Chronicles of Firma” trilogy, Scion’s Blood, maintains its mainstream appeal, it definitely has a distinctly more adult flavor. Whereas his previous book, Orphan’s Quest (2006), portrayed the land of Firma as a place where ‘samers’ (gay people) faced little or no prejudice, Book Two chips away at this shiny veneer and forces the young heroes, on several occasions, to confront a somewhat more stark social reality.
Asked why he felt the need to introduce elements of bigotry and intolerance into his previously idyllic land of Firma, Childs explains: “The most frequent observation I received about Orphan’s Quest, particularly from my gay teen fans, was that the world I portrayed was a bit too much of a social utopia for them to relate to. As I had already planned to make each successive book in the trilogy more thematically mature, I decided that it would be in the best interest of the series to make the world of Firma a little less ideal and a little more realistic, especially for young gay and lesbian readers. While I try to write my books for the enjoyment of everyone, in truth, they are the ones that I’m primarily aiming for. They’re the ones who need heroes the most.”
Scion’s Blood: Book Two of The Chronicles of Firma, has already gone to press and the trade paper edition should be widely available in both the US and the UK by November 30th. The hardcover will follow in mid-December. The story begins three years after the events of Orphan’s Quest. It features many of the characters from Book One, but also introduces some surprising new ones. The storyline is both darker and more complex, reflecting not only the added maturity of the two heroes, but also the more somber and difficult times through which they are living.
