Hospital Chaplain: New Entrepreneurs and Consumers Engaged in Impulse Buying

Valley Stream, NY - November 6, 2007 -- Before you invest another dime in the latest on-line business venture or the newest video game or iPod listen to what former Marine Vietnam Veteran and hospital chaplain says about this.

One day as his daughter was helping him to delete icons from his desktop she said, "Daddy, how many business ventures are you involved in? You're involved in too many things. You can't make any money that way."

It dawned on Reverend Winfield that you can't make a profit when you keep buying into newer ventures before you even successfully marketed the first one. Reverend Winfield says, "The money you spend on an additional venture could have been used to market the first venture. This kind of impulse buying is a type of addiction afflicting many aspiring entrepreneurs who daily surf the Internet for a good home business. They'll find one, get excited, and before they even advertise it they'll find their hearts racing about another money making on-line venture. Before they know it they've become business opportunity junkies lusting for another fix on the Internet. In the end they waste money, make no profit, could wind up in debt and strain their marriage."

He recommends three ways to cure impulse buying of business ventures. First, recognize that you have a problem, an addiction, just as serious as a compulsive gambler. Secondly, you need to focus on one venture at a time. After making some good money then go on to one more venture. Not two or more just one more. Thirdly, because most on-line business ventures have opt-out links at the bottom of the page you are to click the link immediately and remove the temptation.

According to Reverend Winfield, consumers of popular merchandise have a similar problem. We all remember when iPods and Xbox 360s came to the fore with a lot of fanfare and how throngs of people lined up to purchase them. They couldn't wait until the prices came down or to buy them from an on-line wholesaler or from K-Mart or Walmart or Costco. Money was wasted again unnecessarily. The impulsive "must have it now" attitude is another addiction that needs to be cured. How? By simply asking yourself, "Do I really have to have it now?" A lot of movie goers wait until a certain movie becomes a less expensive DVD before they see it. Why can't popular merchandise consumers do the same by simply waiting to make the purchase from discount sources?

As a hospital chaplain for twenty years at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, NY Reverend Winfield has seen people with drug addictions and smoking addictions completely cured and therefore also believes that even the addiction of impulse buying can be cured with the right mindset.
