United States of America (Press Release) November 17, 2007 --
A popular misconception among the masses as that children are more apt to learn a foreign language than adults are. Studies are showing that adults may be equal, if not better, than children at learning a second language.
The "About Memory" website says that adults are better at learning new languages than children are, because adults have better practiced strategies available to them for learning. Harvard Graduate Catherine Snow even said in an interview with HGSE News, "They (adults) master the greater cognitive and linguistic challenge of maintaining two languages, often at a very high level, with much greater success than do children."
One of the bigest problems that children and adults both have is the learning environtment. Studies have shown that less than 5 pervent of foreign language learners complete the study. The rest drop out after 2 years of attempting because of current teaching methods. Learning a language in a classroom is not effective if you cannot use it outside of the class.
GermanFast.com, a German education website, says," Scientific research has proven that the most difficult learning task for children and adults alike may be the attempt to acquire second language proficiency in school environments." The site claims to have overcome this problem by applying a new set of learning strategies that give adults and children a more practical way of learning.
Hopefully, th age old excuse of "I want to but, I'm too old" will be replaced with "I want to". With the growing evidence of adult learning abilities over children and new strategies for teaching languages, the stigma may one day be removed and give adults the confidence they need to excel at and enjoy learning a foreign language.
