United States of America (Press Release) November 18, 2007 --
The October, 2007 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association correlates increased tooth loss with increasd risks of Dementia. This is an extremely important article that focused on the periodontal disease and the inflamatory conditions that accompany it. In recent years the evidence that chronic periodontal disease can cause systemic probles have been impressive. The nun study is so impressive because so many variables are controlled in this group.
Dr Shapira a Highland Park, Illinois dentist who practices in Gurnee feels that there are many other conditions that may relate to the correlation betwen tooth loss and dementia that are not discussed in this article. When there is tooth loss there is an increased incidence of TMJ Disorders. Is the tooth loss and/or gum disease the proximate cause of the dementia or is it possible that the tooth loss cause TMJ disorders that lead to chronic pain and sleep disorders.

An excellent article in JADA sites Nun study that showed participants with the fewest teeth had the highest risk of dementia.
