Southwest Ball Hockey celebrates 37 years!
Southwest Ball Hockey has been providing ball hockey (also known as dek and street hockey in the US ) to children for over 30 years. For the 2007/2008 season, we’re rebuilding the entire rink and getting a new state of the art deck surface.
The league was started by Raymond Pyznarski as Boys Field Hockey, Inc. in 1971 and later changed to Southwest Ball Hockey. The league is celebrating 37 years of providing a safe, fun and cost effective alternative to ice hockey. Southwest Ball Hockey is a non-profit, state chartered corporation. The league is made up of entirely volunteers. Many of the people involved in the league today played as children. Two of the current board members are children of the gentlemen who started the league. Southwest Ball Hockey is Chicago ’s little secret. Our league is the only ball hockey league in the state of Illinois.
The sport of ball hockey has been played for decades in many parts of the world. Ball/dek/street hockey is popular throughout Canada and parts of the United States. The sport has a national organization and world championships. The game is played just as ice hockey except without ice and an orange ball is used instead of a puck. Children wear gym shoes instead of skates or roller blades. The sport provides players a great way to improve their overall hockey skills and physical conditioning.

The SouthtownStar wrote a wonderful article about the league. Staff Writter, Paul Ladewski did a great job.
