The making of the CD:
11/17/06
What was supposed to be the first day of recording at a electric lady land studio turned out to be getting bumped by Deangelo the R-n-B artist who ordered the studio for a block of time and i was only there for a day to record drums and i was told the day before that i was bumped and i already had the drummer Jason Gianni lined up for laying down drum tracks and jason is a studio player whom i only met a few days prior to that and that made for an uncomfortable phone call. Now Karls studio is where everything but the drums was to be recorded because he wanted a big drum sound as did I and so i thought i booked a studio through an old friend and thought it would work out cause sometimes things do but not that day. Enter Karl Cochran who says fuck that bullshit and come to my house and well clear my living room of all the furniture and well get a great drum sound here and stay on schedule to get this done. Gotta love karl.
first day of recording was 11/18/06
Any songwriter or band going through this for the first time better remember to expect to be frustrated and dont get overwhelmed by the process ---its very intense and people dont know exactly what you want who you hire to get it done, so keep a clear vision in your head of your direction with the songs and remember that you have to live with this CD forever.
It started with the drums which Jason Gianni came in after learning the demo i gave him and just hit it out of the park in one session like the pro he is ----i thought this process was gonna fly along and be done before christmas --i was in for the rude awakining---when you dont have the record label backing you with a budget and timeframe, the studio that your hiring has to be flexible with major clients in order to stay in business and you have to learn to be flexible or flip out. -----
Through december i spent most of my weekends at karls studio ,even staying overnight to get tracks done --its like piecing a puzzle together track by track, but once there's something that you can take home and review at the simplest level ,thats when your drive starts to kick in and the pain of not getting it done fast enough starts to ease up alittle. No matter what, your expectations are greater than reality in this situation . to be continued.............................
Weekends are melting away and tracks are getting done with of course some frustration like wanting or actually smashing your head into the wall when what you thought would be the easiest part to record becomes the most difficult and your studio guy(karl) is looking at you like you have some serious problems. In heinsight its hysterical ---at the time of losing it --not so funny--.
Drum tracks were finished in one day and now its a layering process of bass and acoustic tracks and i played acoustic on broken glass and supergenius and let karl do the rest to save time and driving back and forth to jersey and weekend time -- and it looked as if we would have some tracks ready for the mixing guy Rich in florida who was doing karl a favor mixing the tunes for a fair price --which is a whole other thing in the recording industry --- there is such a price war going on you dont know who to believe will do the right thing for the budget you have and my budget wasnt much but if you agree to do it then do it jerkoff and dont complain. Alot bitches in the business. ....
