United States of America (Press Release) November 24, 2007 --
It was a night to hold in your memories for a long while. It was a wonderful turnout in support of the Surfrider Foundation Broward County Chapter, and an even more amazing turnout for the 40th Anniversary of the Greenback Surf Club by the members themselves. It seemed like some of the GSC members appeared out of nowhere. The same can be said for many of the old time friends of the Club. Also in appearance were members of the public that “really do care” about their environment and oceans. All were together to support a cause we all hold so dear but sometimes forget about due to everyone’s busy lives.
The full conglomeration was there. From the quiet demeanor of Keith Piechocki, to the gregarious antics of “CT” Craig Taylor! Along with the unknown dedicated old time surfers, to Dr. and Mrs. Shaw! Heck, even Cowboy showed up!!! They were all there. Even some of the northern territory brethren were there, driving miles and miles to attend the event.
The support crew of beach bunnies was represented extremely well by Wendy, Suzie, Robin, Trudy, Diann, Ann, Emily, and many others. Each one carrying themselves with the same stature they had when crochet bikinis were the norm! The Surf Syndicate Bikini Team will definitely have their hands full representing the new generation, but they are well on their way of doing a great job!
It was great to hear Tommy Ralph speak about the Surfrider Foundation Broward County Chapter and their many accomplishments, and it proves they are going strong! They are definitely committed to ocean awareness and preservation, and it doesn’t stop there. The wide reaching arm of the Surfrider Foundation can only benefit us, and what ever it gets involved in concerning the betterment of our quality of life, and of our planet!
The support from the local surf shops was just incredible! The awesome door prizes were donated from Ocean-Minded Sandals, Billabong, BC Surf Shop, Surf Syndicate Surf Shop, Von Zipper, and the Mack Daddy of em’ all Christian Wolthers of Viking Surfboards, who gave away not 1, but 2 surfboards!!! There was a wide variety of winners and they were STOKED!!!
The Greenback staff headed by Ken Collette, and the Surfrider Foundation crew, were surely busy seeing that all areas were attended to with professionalism and courtesy. And, the Cinema Paradiso did an excellent job as usual presenting a beautiful venue for such events.
The movie provided the unique classical stoke and beauty of that era, along with an awesome “look back into the past” movie short of GSC in the old days!! Many attendees sat back and let the memories of those days bring them to that heartfelt Nirvana that so many people of this day and age miss out on. The past generation of love and discovery back then is a far cry from the saturated populations of today.
So on that note, this article will finish with a segment of Hobby Ryan’s new book due out next year called “The Respite Within”:
The walk back up to the van was a reminder that age is still here no matter how much you want to disregard it. Hell, Bill Brown and I used to climb up and down the cliffs at Blacks all the time. In the rain! With our boards! Anybody who has done it knows how crazy that is!! Ok, so that was back in 1970. I guess I am allowed to feel worked a little bit, ha ha!
Toweling off, and preparing to go to see the spectacular Akaka Falls, I looked back to the waves. Isn’t it awesome to think of all the waves you have looked back on while leaving, and how it puts you into this state of wonderment and peace that you hope you will never forget? Isn’t that slight smile on your face, while thinking of all the different visuals occupying your memory at that time....priceless? I think yes...yes.....yes. I try to visit this feeling many times while being involved in everyday life. As I have said, “Concerning life, at times, I long for the respite.........”
Aloha, Dart
