United States of America (Press Release) November 30, 2007 --
The Chief Imam of Hong Kong, Mufti Muammad Ashrad recognised as the spiritual leader of Muslims in Hong Kong has quit serving on The Arab Chamber of Commerce & Industry's Shariah Advisory Council (SAC).
Following Mufti Ashrad's decision to quit several other other specialist members of the SAC including Dr A S Johan, an international finance consultant and Mr. Angus C K Pun, a noted China Analyst have also quit. The reasons offered for these mass resignations was that they were all too busy to serve the Chamber effictively.
The story going around in Hong kong however, is that it was discovered that Lord Edwin Hitti, the Lebanese founder and self proclaimed president of the Chamber, does not carry a Muslim name is not a Muslim. Many believe that Hitti heading an Arab Chamber and serving on its Shariah Board is not appropriate.
Futher it is being said in Hong Kong that the "Lord" in Hitti's name is not a real inheritied title. He has slso been accused of inducing people to serve his projects and then not paying them for their services.
Whatever the facts are, one thing is certain. Hitti has chosen to go loggerheads with consular representatives in Hong Kong of several powerful Arab Nations by setting up his grandiose Arab Chamber implying that he represents all 22 Arab states.
Given the resignations of important and trusting persons who had esrlier agreed to serve the Chamber in good faith under a cloud of uncertainities, presents Hitti's opponents with the necessary tools to ask the Hong Kong Government to de-register the Arab Chamber rather than allowing it to continue adding insult to Arab nations and to Islam.
Hong Kong has recently warmed up to developing itself into an Islamic Finance centre. The Arab Chamber under Hitti could become a big impediment to this development.
