British Council’s UK India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) organized a week long “Leadership Development Seminar” to further strengthen and celebrate India-UK partnership. The event was organised at The Atrium, Surajkund which brought together the principals and senior faculty members of various government and private schools like Jawahar Navodya Vidyalayas, Amity International School, Modern school and many more. The objective of the seminar was to foster an environment for interaction and collaboration between academia to discuss and initiate cluster school partnerships between schools in India and UK for joint curriculum projects and professional development. The facilitator for the seminar were Dr. Marmar Mukhopadhyay, ex Director,National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NEUPA0 and Jackie Kearns, School Leadership Consultant British Council, Delhi
UKIERI has established 11 cluster partnerships linking 44 schools in the UK with 67 schools in India in the first year. All the clusters are involved in designing their individual joint curriculum projects focusing on subject areas like dance & sports, art & culture, science & technology and environment studies. Besides this, UKIERI school strands also addressed the mainstream education priorities of both the governments, such as internationalism, skills for the 21st century and developing cross cultural participation
Speaking on the occasion, HNS Rao, Deputy Commissioner academics, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalya said “UKIERI’s initiative has enhanced the self esteem and the social skills of our students. The quality of their work has improved as they are sending their work to another country. It has given them an opportunity to learn about the culture, way of living, and curriculum of other country- UK. UKIERI is built into the life of our schools and we are proud to be associated with this initiative.”
The sessions were organised on “Coaching and Mentoring skills”, “Standards for management and leadership in England” and “Understanding school as an organization”.
A total of 67 faculty members attended the seminar from all parts of India.

The UK- India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) is a five year programme which aims to substantially improve educational links between India and UK ensuring in the longer term we become each other’s partner of choice in education.
Under the initiative, United Kingdom has pledged ₤23 million through contributions by the Department for Innovation and Skills, Office of Science and Innovation, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the British Council and devolved authorties of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The private sector has added significantly to this contribution through the 4 corporate champions BAE, BP, GSK and Shell. Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India has also pledged matching funding for science related collaboration under the initiative.
