United States of America (Press Release) December 17, 2007 --
Here is an old story but true.... Now we know why to avoid Noerr
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A 67-year-old Royal Palm Beach man who has played Santa Claus at a mall is facing charges that he sexually abused children.
None of the charges against Jack Horace Grimes stem from any incident while he was playing Santa, police said.
Acting on a complaint filed by the parent of one of the alleged victims, Royal Palm Beach police arrested Grimes earlier this month and charged him with sexual battery and two molestation counts. He pleaded not guilty on Wednesday and remained jailed.
His attorney, Sue Foreman, said she will ask for bond later. If convicted, Grimes - who appeared in court with authentic Santa-like pot belly and white beard - could face life in prison.
Grimes has no prior arrests, but Assistant State Attorney Barry Maxwell said prosecutors know of an adult willing to testify that she was molested by Grimes years ago.
A spokesman for The Noerr Program, a Golden, Colo.-based company that contracts with Palm Beach Mall to provide Santa Clauses and Easter Bunnies, said background checks are run on all their employees.
"You just don't know who's showing up for a seasonal job," said the spokesman, Charles Russell.
