Canada (Press Release) December 28, 2007 --
Dynamic Range Radio, an eclectic internet radio station launched earlier this year, has announced the nominees for its first annual Dynammy Awards. Listeners are invited to vote for their favourites between now and February 8th when voting will cease and results will be tabulated.
The Dynammys are an independent-minded alternative to the Grammys, with nominees picked by the station's DJ, John Erle Mundle, who chose to honour what he deemed to be the best music of 2007, regardless of sales or mainstream media attention.
If listeners don’t agree with the DJs choices, they’re free to write in their own nominees, since the final results will highlight both the Listeners’ Choice awards as well as the DJs personal selections in each category.
Winners will be announced on February 9th, one day before the Grammy awards ceremony.
In keeping with the station's eclectic spirit, the Dynammys don't pigeon-hole artists by separating them into different genres. The nominees for best song feature critical darlings like The Arcade Fire alongside a classic rock icon (Bruce Springsteen) an up-and-coming YouTube sensation (Bat For Lashes) and an obscure indie act (Dean & Britta) covering a lost gem from the 1960s written by Lee Hazelwood and originally sung by Ann-Margret.
There are also awards for Best Comeback and Breakthrough Artist Of The Year, as well as the usual Best Male Artist, Best Female Artist, and Group Of The Year categories.
Since sound quality is a key aspect of what makes Dynamic Range Radio unique, the Dynammys also offer awards for Best and Worst Sound Quality.
According to audiophiles and sound engineers, one key component of good sound quality is the music’s dynamic range, or the fluctuating difference in volume between the loudest and quietest portions of the recording.
Many modern CDs use dynamic range compression to keep the volume at a constant high level, which flattens the sound and leads to listener fatigue. And to make matters worse, many modern CDs push the volume beyond the max, causing distortion.
Dynamic Range Radio is one of the few stations, internet or otherwise, that doesn’t add extra compression to the music before broadcasting it. In fact, DRR uses a dynamic range expander to bring back some of what was lost in the recording process.
“Compression has ruined mainstream music,” says Dynamic Range Radio’s owner and DJ, John Erle Mundle. “You can blame declining CD sales on piracy or increased competition from DVDs and video games, but you can’t overlook the terrible sound quality of most CDs released by major labels over the last several years. When albums sound terrible, they’re hardly worth paying for. That’s why I like to highlight the CDs that actually sound good by singling them out for an award.”
The nominees for Album Of The Year are:
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Baby 81
The New Pornographers – Challengers
Tegan & Sara – The Con
Queens Of The Stone Age – Era Vulgaris
!!! – Myth Takes
Feist – The Reminder
Iron & Wine – The Shepherd’s Dog
LCD Soundsystem – The Sound Of Silver
Steve Earle – Washington Square Serenade
Bloc Party – A Weekend In The City
