GOPIO Chairman Dr Thomas Abraham Conferred 3rd PIO Gaurav Award
Former Vice president Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawat conferred the 3rd ‘Bharat Vanshi Gaurav Samman (Pride of PIO’s award) on Dr Thomas Abraham, the founder Chairman of Global Organization of People of India Origin (GOPIO). The award has been instituted by Antar Rashtriya Sahayog Nays (foundation for international co-operation).
At a special ceremony held at Vithal Bhai Patel House, New Delhi, Mr.Shekhawat commended Dr.Abraham’s contribution in the PIO/NRI movement and said that this award will further motivate GOPIO and Dr. Abraham to continue to take up the issues related to the development of Indian Diaspora.
He said that Indian Diaspora is playing an important role in diverse fields of Information Technology, Medicine and Education. They can make valuable contribution in fields like Biotechnology, Space research, Energy and Water Resources management to realize Vision 2020 of a developed India. Indians are foremost in remitting money back home, repatriating more than 25 billion dollars every year. India with its great civilization and glorious traditions has been a world teacher and the time is not far when India’s supremacy will be reasserted as a knowledge based society.
Earlier, Shri Baleshwar Agrawal, founder president of Antar Rashtriya Sahayog Nyas, gave a brief account of the activities of the foundation for the welfare of PIO’s around the world. The foundation honours one person of Indian origin every year who has excelled in his field and done India proud .The chairman of the foundation Mr. Lakhan Lal Mehrotra appreciated the efforts of Dr.Abraham and said that he has given a solid foundation to the GOPIO for the development of Indian Diaspora.
Dr. Abraham, accepting the award with humility, spoke about the achievements and challenges being faced by the PIO’s in different countries. The award carries Rs one lack in cash, a shawl and a memento. The program was conducted by Mr.Vijender Mittal who informed that the earlier two awards were given to Mr. Ranjit Ram Narain of South Africa and Mr. Sat Maharaj of Trinidad and Tobago.
Presenting the vote of thanks Mr. C. Sharma, former Secretary MEA and Vice President of the foundation said that the PIO’s are the cultural ambassadors of India and the foundation will continue to work for their welfare.
