NPSA Offers Cold Weather Storage Tips

(Jan. 4, 2007) – When snowstorms threaten to disrupt travel and weathermen are reporting near record lows in Florida, you know it's a cold winter. Portable storage can help you beat the heat and keep your valuables warm and dry with heated units.

You may be familiar with air-conditioned portable storage, but in brutal winter months heated storage becomes just as important to retailers, food processors, construction firms and other industries as cooled storage is in the scorching heat. Heated units protect portable storage unit contents from moisture that results from temperature changes throughout the winter, and keeps workers warm in on-site portable offices during lunch breaks.

"You don't necessarily have to store your goods in heated warehouse building to ensure your goods stay warm in the winter," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director the National Portable Storage Association, or NPSA, a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. "Even in the winter, you can still enjoy the convenience of on-site storage if you choose a unit with heating capabilities."

Even mildly cold weather can warp wood. We also know that extremely cold weather has destructive frost and freeze impacts on agriculture. Extreme temperatures can also destroy electronics equipment. The real culprit is moisture. Mold and mildew starts growing in environments with 55 percent humidity. Preventing cold weather – or the humidity that may follows when temperatures fluctuate – from damaging your goods means maintaining an interior environment of at least 65 degrees.

"Heated storage is more than temperature control. Yes, extremely cold weather can damage your goods, but it's the humidity that does most of the damage," said NPSA Operations Manager Joel Rathbone. "If your goods are sensitive to mold and mildew, consider heated portable storage units during the winter months, and air conditioned units during the summer months."
