Complementary Alternative Medicine Practitioners Struggle to Survive in Growing Industry

BROOMFIELD, CO — January 8, 2008 — According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 36 percent of Americans use some form of Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM). That is approximately 108 MILLION people. And trends continue to show an increase in this number.

It is surprising that even with this high number of American’s using CAM, many CAM practitioners are struggling to stay in business. One of the main problems for many practitioners (and most businesses that fail) is their lack of marketing knowledge and skills.

Kelly Robbins, founder of A Marketing Connection, believes this problem stems all the way back to their education. Robbins’s states “marketing is not something that CAM practitioners pick up during their formal education. They are not trained on how to run a successful business. The focus in their training is on treating patients and learning their trade; whether it is acupuncture, chiropractic, massage therapy, etc.” It would appear that many practitioners find themselves fully equipped and prepared to heal patients, but they have no one or very few patients to practice on after graduation. They are forced to learn marketing and other entrepreneurial traits afterwards, oftentimes at high expense.

To help practitioners overcome this growing problem, Kelly Robbins and A Marketing Connection offer CAM specific marketing packages. An experienced health care marketer, Robbins’ goal is to help practitioners with their marketing so they can tap into this huge market easily and effortlessly. Marketing packages include services from writing content on practitioner's web sites to creating educational material and implementing ezines and other marketing systems.

“We find that many CAM practitioners not only don’t know how to market their business, but they don’t like doing marketing. They want to treat patients” says Robbins, which is why A Marketing Connection concentrates on implementing marketing systems rather than one big advertising campaign. According to Robbins, when marketing systems are put in place, reaching out to prospective patients happens on an ongoing basis and requires little involvement from practitioners themselves. Making marketing more likely to happen, and more likely to work.
