Austin-based trio SUBROSA UNION heads out on first Armed Forces Entertainment tour

The up-and-coming group Subrosa Union will rock the troops at U.S. military bases in Southwest Asia, January – February. Their original musical style reflects a melting pot of diverse musical influences, ranging from hip hop, Latin funk and reggae, to rock and roll and R&B.
The group's members, Mike Anaya, guitar and vocals; Chris Paulos, bass and emcee; and Paul Valenzuela, drums; coined the term "Rasta Rock" for their unique sound. The trio, originally from El Paso, Texas, relocated to Austin in 2006 to be part of the city's nationally recognized music scene. Today, Subrosa Union is best known as an opening act for nationally touring groups like Slightly Stoopid, Pepper and the MTV Caffeine Tour with Carmen Electra.
"The boys are really excited about getting the chance to go to Southwest Asia with Armed Forces Entertainment," said Michael Anaya Sr., Mike Anaya's father and manager of Subrosa Union. "They've expressed many times how much they want to go overseas to express their gratitude to our troops for all that they do for us back home. We want share our music with them and let them enjoy themselves and take their minds off the pressures they face."
The group began playing together eight years ago while in high school. The band's sound is truly original, but reflects musical influences such as Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Stevie Ray Vaughan. They recently released their debut album, "Looking Forward," which was produced by Austin indie label Fugamundi Records.
"Subrosa Union puts on a riveting, high-energy show that I know our troops are going to really enjoy," said Army Captain Trevor Garrett, Armed Forces Entertainment circuit manager for Southwest Asia. "Their music combines the best elements of reggae, hip hop and rock and roll, with an infusion of spicy Latin funk, to create a performance that offers something for everyone."
