“One Cookie at a Time” Auntie Ellyn’s Mandel Bread/Jewish Biscotti www.AuntieEllyns.com
Ellyn Glazer took a chance. It happened on a trip to Boston while taking a much-needed vacation after the book company she worked for closed its doors. In a café with friends, she asked for some biscotti cookies to accompany her cappuccino. The owner replied that he sold them at one time, but lost the baker who made them for him and had not found a good replacement. Ellyn remarked, “Well, you’ve never tasted mine!” The owner asked if she had a business, and “yes” came out of her mouth. She called it “Auntie Ellyn’s Mandel Bread, or Jewish biscotti.” The owner asked for samples.
Ellyn complied, sending her cookies to him--chocolate chip, raspberry almond, and apricot, along with a whole-wheat version. Upon receiving the samples, the café owner called Ellyn and placed an order.
Ellyn was clueless about how to set a price or even the proper way to mail the order. Luckily, Ellyn had a friend in banking who taught her how to calculate the price. She then brought samples to local businesses and began to get orders. Ellyn needed a commercial kitchen to prepare the cookies. Financial backing from her cousin, Robert Kaye, enabled her to buy the appliances and make the business a reality. Hiring friends from her gym to help her bake, Auntie Ellyn’s Mandel Bread was born.
With staff to help her, Ellyn sought more accounts and experimented with flavors. She now sells over 60 flavored gourmet style Kosher and Pareve cookies in her online business, and supplies Bloomingdale’s in Short Hills and NYC, and Serenella’s Market in Marlboro.
She attributes her success to the women who work for her, the support of her husband and her cousin’s initial financial help. Ellyn works the sales, but her staff does the bulk of the work. She could not succeed without them. Ellyn feels secure knowing the product they will put out would be as if Ellyn baked it herself.
Ellyn remains hands-on about her business. She ensures that every cookie leaving the facility is perfect. This concern for quality in combination with her caring staff and her supportive husband, allowed an out-of-nowhere idea to transform her passion to her livelihood.
