Business Networking Groups on the Rise
New York City entrepreneurs, network marketers, job seekers and small business owners turn to networking groups to develop and expand their businesses.

New York, NY, January 10, 2008 — What does a nurse, a lawyer, a commercial real estate broker, and a network marketer have in common?

All were among the 109 in attendance at “Networking For Entrepreneurs and Aspiring Entrepreneurs” event at Proof Bar and Lounge in Downtown, Manhattan for the purpose of networking. These included, Insurance salesmen, Registered Nurses, Web Hosting Providers, Lawyers, Computer Analysts, Programmers and Designers, Commercial and Consumer Real Estate Brokers and Agents, Project Managers, job seekers, Business Consultants. The variety and scope of the event demonstrates the growing awareness of the power of networking and shows its no longer just for aficionados of home-based businesses, but extend into the very heart of traditional, brick and mortar businesses who are accepting the amazing power of networking to deliver clients to their establishments.

Driving this trend in recent years, is the continuing economic change which finds more people seeking ways to enhance their incomes outside their existing jobs. The uncertain value of pension plans and the future of Social Security drive many to explore ways to develop supplemental or alternate sources of residual income.

This change was evident as early as 2005, when Success From Home Magazine was quoted as saying, “The truth is things are not going to go our way unless we make a change. A change in the way we approach our jobs and, more importantly, the way we approach our lives.” The change includes finding new ways to make a secondary income.

“Networking” provides a way for people to meet and learn to leverage each other’s strengths and increase the chances of successfully building extra income, providing introductions to new people who want or need a given product or service.

For example, on a recent Meetup event, a real estate broker and a computer analyst were able to join efforts and exchange customer referals on properties held by the broker and web site being sold by the analyst (who sold websites on the side). Wham! A mutually beneficial arrangement for all concerned.

Social networks websites like MySpace, Friendster, Facebook and classified services like CraigsList are creating a group dynamic that allows the establishment of small organizations that can quickly grow and thrive. One of the latest of these online communities, Meetup.com, is designed specifically to enable people to schedule events and get the word out to individuals across the country and around the world. There are currently 38,434 separate “Meetup Groups” on the service, and these groups have generated a total of 3,564 Meetup Topics. Any topic from (Athiest to Zen), can be found on Meetup.com. And business and entrepreneurial topics are growing.

The events are usually engaging and fun for participants. According to a review posted on the site an attendee, Mark Lotan, [this is] “Truly is a great venue for meeting new and interesting people; [it] was very casual, friendly atmosphere where ideas, sales pitches, and experiences are shared.
