United States of America (Press Release) January 21, 2008 --
Bill Clinton Blames "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" On Everybody Else
Don't Ask, Don't Tell was used to hurt gays and lesbians in uniform, and the president who signed on to it is now laying the blame for the toll it has taken on the careers of well-trained, loyal members of the military at the door of others.
DADT was supposed to be more than a joke played on gay military. It was supposed to be a protection from their being harassed by their commanding officers' direct questioning about sexual orientation. It effectively ended the legally accepted, official ban on gays in the military, and made it illegal not to be serving while gay, but to question and entrap gay service members. That's the "Don't Ask" part.
There was a "Don't Tell" part also, remember? It meant that a soldier was to put his or her service first while he or she was active, and not force their commanders' hand by being out in uniform.
XXX
What Clinton says about his intentions is absolutely correct. What the bottomless wellspring of homophobia and fuckery that is the US Military (US Navy excepted) functionally made of DADT isn't his fault.
