St. Paul, MN - January 21, 2008 -
The Q Kindness Café opened the restaurant Saturday morning to find they'd been robbed. The thief broke in the back door. They stole $200 from the cash machine plus $50 of the waitress' tips from the day before. "I've been so happy with how the business rebounded since renovations. Last week was our busiest in over two years. On Friday the girl's tip cups were stuffed. It's sad that someone would steal from us, when I'd like to think we give so much", says owner Lisa Metwaly.
On Saturday one customer left a $20 tip for the waitresses after she found out their tips had been stolen. "Her generosity touched our hearts and brought tears of joy to all of our eyes", says Metwaly.
Random acts of kindness are part of the restaurants mission. To fight off the focus on the negative effects of the robbery, owner Metwaly will donate $100 worth of hand warmers to customers on that ride the bus on Wednesday. The heat packs last around 7 hours so people are asked to pass them along when they arrive at their destination.
One of the major acts of kindness are given at the events hosted at the restaurant. Guests receive two $5.00 gift certificates to be given away as a random act of kindness, preferably to someone they don't know. Many of the students from the School of Performing Arts, next door, are recipients who are then asked to continue the momentum of giving by paying it forward and asking others to do the same. The kindness can be anything; a note, kind words, a gift or something else.
Perpetual kindness in St. Paul is the goal for owner, Metwaly.
Other kind acts have included a box of handmade mittens and scarf donated by women that heard about the kindness campaign from a customer, bags of food for the food shelves, books and money for preschoolers who are learning to read. One group of kids from the school each received $5 from a complete stranger one day. The teachers are always doing nice things for the kids for no reason at all. It feels good to bear witness to the unconditional giving.
Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch? It happens all the time at The Q Kindness Café from complete strangers at random. No strings attached.
"If you are focused on being kind, it is hard to be mean. People want to make a difference in the community. Why not belong to something bigger than ourselves? What if we could change lives for the better? What if St. Paul became a city of day makers together? We can. We are. Join us if you haven't already. Do a kind deed at random today and don't forget to ask the person to pay it forward.
It's like random acts of violence only people being nice. Instead of getting back at others when they do something nice, you surprise someone who least expects it and do a random act of kindness. It beats being mean.
The Q Kindness Cafe is located in the Lowry building at 350 St. Peter St. in downtown St. Paul. The restaurant serves Q quality cooked to order breakfast and lunch, Monday through Saturday. Details about events, philosophy and full menu can be found at www.qkindness.com
