United States of America (Press Release) January 21, 2008 --
Mammography services have historically drawn minimal revenue margins in comparison to other imaging services and have been one of the last clinical imaging areas to adopt digital technology. Nevertheless, digital mammography equipment experienced more than a 100 percent increase in 2006 over the 2005 market level.
Advancing digital technology offers the potential for added efficiencies in throughput and diagnosis which may be driving factors in the sudden urgency of adoption. Additionally, Full Field Digital Mammography systems have improved beyond their film screen counterparts, especially in screening women under 50 and women of any age with dense breasts. They also allow hospitals and clinics to modernize their enterprise workflow with applications such as PACS.
As a result of provider demand for information on user experiences with digit mammography, KLAS is publishing its inaugural study on digital mammography from a user standpoint. In this Digital Mammography Report, KLAS investigates the success and challenges providers have had incorporating digital mammography into their hospital or clinic.
Though patient throughput generally increases and some workflows improve, not all providers report receiving the significant enhancement to overall work efficiency and revenues that vendors may promise. However, nearly all providers are experiencing some level of improvement in their effectiveness and diagnostic screenings. When asked if the investment in digital mammography was worth the effort, providers expressed positive returns on the initial investment. However, from a business perspective, the ROI becomes somewhat more of a mixed bag.
Vendors included in the report are GE, Hologic and Siemens.
