"A few years ago I was taking a personal retreat in a monastery in Vermont. It is a retreatant's responsibility to participate in daily chores. I was helping in the kitchen when one of the nuns asked that I break in half the green beans that were in a large bucket, freshly picked from the garden. I was delighted with this task. It was such a simple and pleasant task and I was feeling very relaxed. After I was finished I approached the sister and said, "Sister, I'm done with my task. What can I do now?" She looked at me and said, "Rest." I responded enthusiastically, "No, really Sister, I have more energy to continue, I can do some more work." She again said, "Rest." Well, I continued, "Sister, what else can I do really, because I can do more!" At this point, I recognized that I was beginning to annoy her, and it's not easy to annoy a monastic! She looked me straight in the eyes and in a firm tone said, "Rest...........Now."
