United States of America (Press Release) February 1, 2008 --
American-born writer and Internet publisher, Mike Booth, who renounced his U.S. passport in the mid-80’s in order to take Spanish citizenship, asserts in his soon-to-be-published book, The You of My Song: Notes from a Voluntary Exile, that contrary to popular urban legends, George W. Bush is not stupid.
According to Booth, “People like to make jokes about how stupid President George W. President Bush is. This, I submit, is a misconception based on mere personal animadversion. President Bush may not be a rocket scientist, but to say he's stupid is a grave mistake. I fear the reality is more sinister. President Bush has a hidden agenda, and it’s not even that well hidden. While proclaiming himself the paladin of American-style ‘freedoms’ around the world, the President's actions clearly indicate that he has other priorities, notably to grab the natural resources of the entire world and to enrich his friends in the arms and oil business. President Bush's permanent war on terror is a spectacular success, if you measure success by the billions of dollars flowing into his friends’ corporate coffers.”
The author also contends that the character that Bush has assumed to advance his agenda, that of a folksy, down-home Texas rancher, is also a counterfeit. “In the first place,” he says, “President George W. Bush isn’t a Texan. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut, the scion of a dynasty of the New England power elite. He studied at Yale. His mother tongue is New England Brahmin. He correctly uses the subjunctive mood when he speaks. Not only is President Bush not stupid, he’s shrewd and opportunistic, the ideal spokesperson for anyone who wants to influence the great American unlettered, faith-based masses, that sector of the American population which is capable of swinging a presidential election.”
Though he does a formidable imitation, President Bush is not the simple-minded good ol’ boy he would like you to believe, according to the author. He’s a three-dollar bill. “What’s he doing down in Texas playing the redneck?” asks Booth. “Is he a sleeper, planted down there when he was young and groomed to develop that lowbrow demeanor so as he could appeal to the intellectual lowest common denominator of American voters, or was that just an unfortunate coincidence?”
"The You of My Song" presents an irreverent account of a young American’s arrival in a “strange and wonderful new country,” his ongoing efforts to become “just another Spaniard,” followed by a critical look, 40 years on, of the country he left behind. A three-chapter sample of the book can be read and downloaded at the author’s blog: http://mikebooth.wordpress.com.
