United States of America (Press Release) February 6, 2008 --
On February 9th, 2008 Designers for Darfur (www.designersfordarfur.org) will commemorate their one year anniversary at DEX New York Studios located at 224 West 30th Street in New York City between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. (RSVP to press@designersfordarfur.com).
Designers for Darfur (DFD) was launched via an unprecedented charity fashion show held on February 9th, 2007 in New York City. DFD has also held periodic events as well as launched several initiatives over the past year in order to keep the spotlight firmly on the crisis in Darfur. Designers for Darfur represents hundreds of international designers and the wider fashion community collectively banding together to show their commitment and solidarity towards ending the atrocity of genocide currently taking place in Darfur.
For this commemorative event there will be key members of the Save Darfur Coalition in attendance to inform and empower attendees on what individual actions each can take in order to assist in ending the genocide. Attendees will also have an opportunity to participate in the video documentary “Prayers for Darfur”. Prayers for Darfur will sponsor a designated filming area where attendees will have the chance to contribute video prayers addressed to the people of Darfur and/or messages to the United Nations, World Leaders and the United States and Chinese governments.
As China has been identified as major contributors to the Sudanese government, Designers for Darfur has turned their awareness raising efforts into quantifiable action. As the apparel/fashion industry are major contributors to the Chinese economy via outsourced manufacturing and production, DFD has drafted a petition addressed to the Consulate General of China/Chinese Government requesting they cease funding the Sudanese government which has allowed these atrocities in Darfur, Sudan to continue. The petition will be launched at Designers for Darfur’s one year anniversary.
Designers for Darfur hope and pray there will be no more anniversaries to commemorate their efforts and that next year we will all be celebrating the rebuilding of Darfur.
