Italy, Italian Republic (Press Release) February 16, 2008 --
Luca Mattei invited to present his new oceanic campaign in Barcelona.
A series of crew/double and solo racing that will bring Luca to the start line of the next edition of Velux 5 Oceans, the 30.000 nautic miles solo round the world race.
He will race this round the world on an Open ’60, “a vibrating surfing board of 18 meters!”, as he call his project boat.
Who got you into sailing?
During a summer holiday, when i was 6 years old. My parents convinced me to follow a sailing course. And then the love blow up.
Luca racing a yacht alone around the world is one of the toughest, most risky disciplines within any sport. Why do you want to do it?
This is a dream from when i was a young boy. when i spent the lessons time reading the sailing magazine in classroom. On this project there are all my life, and i go forward despite the hardest point isn’t rounding the South Pole alone but to find sponsorship. Sorry, but when you think that more than 15,000 people are estimated to have been scaled Everest and only
163 people have sailed around the world singlehanded, around one third the number of people who have been into space... you don’t hear a little voice from inside that say “Do it guy, do it!”?
What one event changed your life?
In February 2003 sailing in the Channel during a strong gale. But i don’t love to talking about it.
What’s your secret?
I never give up! Never...
I go forward against all difficulties, in the sea like in my life.
When you are used to reach snap by the sea, the others seems nothing.
The sea are a really school of life.
Greatest triumph?
My greatest success is called Mariagiulia, she’s a girl with handicap, and i had the luck of to teach sailing to her . In May 2007 she won his first sailing race on a Marteen 16, a special boat. Could you think about a bigger success? I hope to could help with my work Mariagiulia and the others young like she to follow our big passion.
For a sailor is important don't forget the youth. In Italy, going on so, we risk to loose all traditions about the sea and the seamanship. I'll give all my collaboration to realize the "italiansolochallenge educational program" to speak in the schools about sea, nature, story, technology and all things that are about a solo sail round the World race.
The sea as a school of life, a big dream and a strong determination.
This is in few words what Luca “Hold Fast” Mattei say about himself.
A navigated skipper that could make a lot for italian ocean sailing.
