Thursday, February 14th, 2008, ATLANTA, GA , U.S.A The Impair Aware Corporation has been written about by world famous economists in The New York Times. The articles co-author, Steven Levitt was chosen as one of Time Magazine's "100 People Who Shape Our World" in 2006. Levitt describes the machine as, "Sometimes a good idea is so obvious that you can’t believe no one has made it happen yet. That would seem to be the case with something called the Impair Aware Alcohol Level Indication System. It’s a machine you can put in a bar or restaurant that lets you measure your blood alcohol level so you know if you’re fit to drive or not. This takes the guesswork out of a guessing game that has been going on for generations." The articles other author, Steven Dubner, was the most recent winner of the John Bates Clark award for the best economist under the age of 40. The author's conclude that the Impair Aware Machine "seems to be a great idea."
The Impair Aware Machine was developed Federico Forero who is the owner of Impair Aware. Forero has been a longtime manager of a probation office in Atlanta. Forero contacted local business person Chris Baker to help get the company started. Baker, who had done extensive marketing and public relations in Atlanta’s nightlife and entertainment community, joined with him to help market the device.
Impair Aware has secured distributors in more than 10 states nationwide as well as in Canada and Europe. Currently, Forero and Baker are working with the local and national government to introduce the device to law enforcement as a way to save lives. "Our goal is to make it a requirement that all new liquor license applicants in the State of Georgia have an Impair Aware Machine available for their patrons. The good news for bar owners is that we are also in negotiation with alcohol manufacturers to pay for their Impair Aware machines--if they are willing to offer it with their brand's logo on it," says Baker.
