The most Outrageous Salary Cap in Football
The fan base is mostly families. Endorsements usually consist of free pizza after games and the occasional team T-shirt. And the “outrageous” salary cap is $0. As in Zero. I am referring to the modern day “Leatherheads” – the football warriors who play out of sheer passion for football. The aptly named Minor League Football Teams might be more appropriately named “Unpaid Professional Football Players” or perhaps “The Unsung Heroes of American Football”. And here in Colorado, we are blessed with one of the greatest collections of teams, which comprise the Colorado Football Conference.
In a year that saw the demise of NFL Europe, and the downsizing of the NIFL (National Indoor Football League) and UIF (United Indoor Football League), the CFC actually added new teams and had to turn away additional ones. So what makes the CFC so special? It’s simple: Owners and players who play with honor, dignity, and dedication; qualities money can’t buy.
The typical CFC football player has a full time job, a family, and practices twice a week. They willingly submit themselves to volunteer coaches and gracious owners, who in return give them the opportunity to play full contact football in the scorching heat of summer. The players pay team fees, buy their own equipment, provide their own medical insurance, and even pay their own travel and meal expenses. There is no other football venue in America that requires this level of dedication and commitment. College and professional players are well compensated for their time. And if you talk to any CFC player, they would tell you that what the game gives them in return for their hard work is compensation enough.
Don’t get the wrong idea that compensation equals talent. The CFC is rich in talent that flies under the radar of NFL scouts and Combines. On any given day there are more than a dozen players who can knock the legendary “forty time” out of the park. Our Offensive Linemen are immovable rocks of protection while the Defensive Linemen are massive forces of attack. Our kickers are accurate enough for the indoor game with the powerful legs needed for outdoors. It’s no secret that everyone wants to play a skill position. In the CFC this has become one of the springboards to greatness. When 25 players show up to earn a wide receiver spot on a team that only carries 7….well, you have to work twice as hard, which in turn increases the quality of cornerbacks and safeties. Running backs face even more competition due to the number of slots. Quarterbacks in this league have to possess a multitude of “intangibles” to lead a group of grown men onto the field. Denver Titans QB, Jason Lechuga is an icon of virtue and determination. This devoted husband and father of three was presented the Rich Reyes Man of the Year Award in 2004. He has three championship rings, nine MVP awards, and is listed as an All American in the Minor League Football Association. When asked what award he is most proud of he humbly answered, “That I am a trophy of grace”, referring to his faith in God.
On February 29, 2008 this veteran of the CFC will lead an all-star selection of CFC Players to play not for trophies or rings, but for abused and neglected children. The game against the Colorado Ice, a professional indoor team, will directly benefit Realities for Children, a charity that provides emergency services for abused, neglected, and at-risk children in Colorado. Although all players will wear Denver Titans Jerseys for this particular game, the team is composed of players from across the CFC with almost every team represented at some level. These selfless CFC owners are allowing members of their squad to wear another team’s jersey in the name of charity. Can you imagine Shanahan letting one of his players wear an Oakland jersey for any reason? Me either. But this just demonstrates the mentality of CFC owners as they lay their individual logos and colors down for the sake of the league and the good of the players. The newly formed Cobras will even be cheering their starting linebacker, Veteran Marcus Miller as he suits up in an Ice jersey. The selflessness of the league as a whole is inspirational.
This writer predicts that one day Minor League Football will become to the NFL what Minor League Baseball is to the Majors. Think I’m crazy? The first football game was played in front of 100 fans. The first paid football player earned $10.00 plus expenses. The first professional contract was for $500.00. I doubt that those pioneers of what has become America’s favorite sport could even fathom the popularity of the NFL. Only time will tell, but I think we’re making football history here in Colorado; we just don’t know it yet.
Our future starts next Friday night at the Budweiser Center, when the unpaid, unsung heroes of the CFC take on the Colorado Ice…..not for money or glory – but for the love of the game.
